Description
In the 19th century British coal miners used safety lamps invented by Sir Humphry Davy. Sir Humphry had discovered that a flame enclosed inside a fine mesh cannot ignite outside gasses. The screen acts as a flame arrestor. Although not a safety lamp, this beautiful table lamp mimics the design of the Davy lamp with its fine mesh exhaust at the top. (It also has greater glass area than our other oil lamps of a similar size. It is beautifully made by hand and will burn either standard lamp oil or kerosene equally well for hours before a refill is needed. Either fuel will be available locally. Two sizes are available - 8" and 10" tall, identical except for size.

"My wife has owned two of the traditional brass oil lamps from Garrett Wade for over a year, and we have used them often. . . . meaning, they are not strictly decorative. Having explored mines in South Dakota, Kentucky, Ohio, Upper Pennisula of Michigan and elsewhere, I thought this would be a great addition to our lamps. . . . and it is. . . . for the novice, a little more 'tinkering' when setting wick height and burn pattern, yet it burns 'true' and is a very unique lantern style, not commonly available. . . . nice construction and materials."

"Which lamp are you referring to? I order the first 10"" mesh lamp and received it. I later learned that is leaked. I returned it for replacement. I haven't heard from you regarding this return. Before I learned that the first lamp leaked, I ordered a SECOND 10"" mesh lamp. I have since received it, and it's PERFECT."

- Miranda, these lamps do not give off heat to any discernible degree. Also I would hesitate to use a naked flame inside a tent. Garrett Wade sells various LED camping lights which may be more appropriate for your purpose. Thankyou
